Just Add Water | How A Flooded Mine Became An Unexpected Paradise
In the Riverina, we’re pretty good at working with what the land gives us. Sometimes that’s world-class grain or award-winning wine, and sometimes, as is the case in Barmedman, it’s an accidental oasis that has become the soul of the community.
Tucked halfway between West Wyalong and Temora, the Barmedman Mineral Pools are a testament to local ingenuity.
What started as a flooded 19th-century goldmine is now a vast, turquoise swimming hole that feels like a secret the rest of the world hasn't quite stumbled upon yet.
Naturally fed by underground springs, the water here is famously high in minerals. Locals have sworn by its restorative powers for generations; it’s gently buoyant and often compared to floating in a giant, open-air Epsom salt bath.
Whether you’re soothing sore muscles after a long drive or just looking to wash away the day’s heat, there is something deeply grounding about lying back and watching the Riverina sky from the water.
Spread out over an acre surrounded by shady trees and grass, this isn't a place for "quick stops."
With mature trees, manicured lawns, and free-to-use BBQs, as well as accessible access, during the peak summer months, the kiosk keeps the ice creams coming, and the shade covers keep you cool and sun-safe out of the midday heat.
A Pool Powered by Community
What really makes Barmedman special is its heart. The pools are maintained by a dedicated group of local volunteers who take immense pride in this slice of paradise. Entry is by donation, reflecting that classic regional hospitality where the goal isn't profit, it's about sharing something special with anyone who passes through.
If you’re navigating the Newell Highway, winding through our Italian-influenced wine trails, or simply looking for a detour that rewards your curiosity, the Barmedman Mineral Pool is a convenient, half-way stop.
